Opéra Comique de Washington
Swashbuckling adventure meets convent chaos in Louis Varney’s lively operetta, Les Mousquetaires au Couvent!
In 17th-century France, the dashing musketeer Gontran has a slight problem—he’s madly in love with Marie, a spirited young woman who just so happens to be locked away in a convent. Determined to reunite with his beloved, he teams up with his mischievous comrade Brissac and an opportunistic abbot to stage a daring (and utterly ridiculous) rescue. Their master plan? Disguise themselves as monks, sneak into the convent, and charm their way through.
But things don’t go quite as planned. Between drunken sermons, unexpected romance, and nuns who are far from naive, their scheme spirals into a series of uproarious misadventures. Just when it seems they’ve landed themselves in serious trouble, fate takes a turn—as their antics accidentally prevent an assassination plot against Cardinal Richelieu, turning them from fugitives into unlikely heroes.
With its sparkling melodies, rapid-fire wit, and a touch of irreverence, Les Mousquetaires au Couvent has delighted audiences since its 1880 Parisian premiere. Now, L’Opéra Comique de Washington brings this hidden gem to the Maison Française at the Embassy of France, performed in our signature concert-style format. Our past embassy productions have sold out—don’t wait to secure your seats!
